2nd World Debate Forum - Featured Presentations!‏

Hello Everyone!

There's about a week remaining to submit your presentations for the 2nd World Debate Forum! We currently have 10 presentations registered and have space for 6 more. I've shared some of the presentation below - we will also feature presentations about debate in Africa (with specific focus on the Pan-African championships and growth of debate), Arabic debate in the Middle East, debate and conflict resolution and the growth of WSDC in Asia. 

In case you've missed previous emails, the forum will be held at Ateneo de Manila University from the 4th to the 7th of January 2012. Your registration fee of 75 USD includes accommodation at the Great Eastern Hotel Manila, transportation to the forum venue, breakfast, lunch and snacks. Alex Dukalskis Executive Director, IDEA-US, PhD Candidate, Notre Dame	Debate and Journalism Workshops Over the past two years, IDEA and the Open Society Foundations have conducted a unique series of debate and journalism workshops.  Regional in scope, seven such workshops have taken place in Thailand, Uganda, Moldova, Latvia, Kyrgyzstan, and Nepal and have featured about 250 students from 19 countries. This presentation will provide an overview of the unique curriculum of this series of workshops as well as discuss ways in which it may be adapted to other subject areas.
Sharmila Parmanand Co-CA Berlin Worlds 2013, MA Candidate, Melbourne University	Debate and Political Engagement There is increasing synergy among university debate organisations, the media, and youth activists in shaping public discourse in the Philippines. Student debaters, in partnership with NGOs and civil society groups, have been involved in voter education campaigns during elections and generating awareness and lobbying for the passage of crucial legislation such as land reform, freedom to information laws and reproductive health laws. This presentation explores opportunities for further collaboration across these spheres and beyond Metro Manila.
Suthen Tate Thomas CA Koc Worlds 2010, CA UADC 2012	High School Debate Development in Iraq The presenter will share his experiences running a course on debating involving high school teachers in Iraq. Highlights will be lessons learned and strategies for sustainability.
David Crane Executive Director, IDEA UK	Introducing the new idebate.org The new idebate.org contains a range of great features designed to help debating societies gain more members, communicate with existing members, organise live events, take part in online video or text debating and form groups.  The site includes a social network allowing debaters to stay in touch with, learn from and share with other debaters.  It also contains a much expanded Debatabase that debaters can contribute to for the first time, plus online learning and mentoring facilities too.  Come to this session to learn how these features can be used to benefit you, your organisation and debating as a whole
Logan CA Botswana Worlds 2011, Visiting Professor, Chung Ang University, Seoul	Compulsory Debate Course in Chung Ang University For the last 5 years it has been mandatory for all students in the Business College of Chung Ang University to do one semester of debate. This presentation looks at how the course was run (syllabus, evaluation strategies) and impacts on students based on PRCA surveys that were conducted at the start and the end of the course (with comparison to sample groups).

World Debate Forum Participation Subsidy

The World Debate Forum (WDF) is a place for people who love debate to talk about how we can increase its impact. We recognize that there are many different groups using debate in unique ways to achieve their goals - be it personal enrichment, improving their communities, as education tools or just to enjoy themselves. The WDF hopes to bring all these people together, to meet just after the largest debate event in the world (the World Universities Debating Championships - WUDC), with the hope that engagement and sharing between these different sub-communities of debate lovers will strengthen the work they individually do, as well as improve the debate community as a whole. 

The 2nd WDF will held from the 4th to 7th of January 2012. It will be hosted at Ateneo de Manila University, and be organized by the Ateneo Debate Society (ADS) and the International Debate Education Association (IDEA). Visit the website, www.worlddebateforum.org for more information.

IDEA has made available a limited amount of funds to subsidize participation in the WDF.  Please answer the questions below in an email, attach an updated CV, and send it to apply@idebate.org with the subject line World Debate Forum Subsidy.  Subsidies will be considered on a case-by-case basis and priority will be given to merit, need and compelling reasons for wanting to attend the WDF.  Applicants who plan to present at the WDF will be given priority over those who do not plan to present.  Those individuals who are already competing at the WUDC tournament will not be eligible for funding which goes toward air travel (unless there are exceptional circumstances), although they may apply to have the WDF registration fee waived.

2nd World Debate Forum January 2012‏

Greetings friends,

I'm happy to announce that we will be organizing the 2nd World Debate Forum (WDF) this year, from the 4th to 7th January 2012 at Ateneo de Manila University (immediately after Manila Worlds). I'd like to invite those of you coming for Worlds to extend your stay and those of you who are not coming to Worlds, to come for the World Debate Forum.

What is the WDF?

Our plan is to bring together different groups of debate enthusiasts, people who love this activity but from different perspectives. To some of us, debate is first a competition, a way to hone our persuasive skills, develop our intellect, expand our horizons. To others is an amazing educational tool, an activity that challenges students, develops their perspectives and gives them ownership over knowledge. Others believe debate is most importantly a tool of advocacy, a way to develop open societies, to empower people's voices, to help increase understanding and tolerance. 

Debate is all three. By working together and not past each other, we can make the entire community stronger and increase the impact of debate.

The 1st WDF forum attracted almost 40 people from 16 countries. Our target this year is to have 100 attendees. You can learn more about last year's forum by downloading the report from the front page of our website.

Forum Format

The format is simple and modeled after TED Talks. Each topic area (Competitive Debate, Debate Education and Debate Advocacy) will be allocated 4 20 minute presentation slots. At the end of these 4 slots, there will be an hour long open forum on the topic area, with a moderator and these four presenters. This - 4 presentation and 1 open forum - is one session.

Check in the evening of the 4th and checkout 7th morning. The 75 USD reg fee will give you 3 nights accommodation, breakfast, lunch and snacks. Why should you care?

We don't debate enough about debate. Sure, specific debates are discussed and results disputed until the tab runs dry, but we don't debate enough about the value of our activity and its impact. 

Often there just isn't enough time at debate tournaments and frankly not everyone is interested (which is absolutely fine). Meeting old friends and making new ones take priority over the different forums already being squeezed into Worlds, and that's what international tournaments are about.

But as we speak, debate programs are taking root in Afghanistan, Zimbabwe, Azerbaijan, Kyrgystan, Rwanda, Venenzuela and many other places. Debate is being introduced as a subject in highschools in Romania, a university in Korea makes it compulsory for all freshmen to learn debate and an NGO in Australia is teaching refugees debate skills.

More people are doing debate this year in more places in more ways in more languages than they were last year, and even more will do so next year. Contribute to this growth of debate. Help shape it and learn from it. 

Debates don't make a difference, debaters do ;)

PIDC 2011

Hello everyone!

The University of the Philippines Debate Society and the Philippine Daily Inquirer is hosting the Philippine Inter-collegiate Debating Championship 2011 on April 6-11, 2011 here in UP Diliman Campus, Philippines. Around 300+ students from all over the Philippines including some Southeast Asian affiliates are coming to the largest Asians Parliamentary tournament in the country. We are glad to announce that we have slots for international teams interested in coming to Manila to debate with us.

La Salle IV 2011

I am very honoured to announce that the *La Salle Debate Society *will be hosting the the 2nd La Salle IV from April 29 to May 1, 2011.

*This is the pre-UADC tournament you do not want to miss!*

The La Salle IV will be contested in the Asians Parliamentary Debate Format , with 5 preliminary rounds, and break rounds from the Quarter Finals to the Grand Final round.

The Chief Adjudicator of the La Salle IV is none other than our very own, Lucinda David! DCAs of the tournament will be announced as soon as we receive their confirmation.

We have a tournament cap of 70 teams, and we are strictly enforcing the n-1 rule. Institutions may send as many teams as they want granted that they follow this rule. 

Aside from flying-in an international adj core, we are waiving registration fees for 9 qualified
adjudicators. Our CA will be announcing details regarding this matter in the coming weeks.

Registration fee costs 1,500 Philippine Pesos per individual. That is less than 35 US Dollars! Registration fee covers lunch and PM snacks for three days, the Breaknight Party and the Championship Dinner. We are working with our partner hotels to give us a good rate for participants requiring accommodations during the tournament.

Registration opens on February 15, 2011, Tuesday at 10 AM, GMT +8. We encourage teams to register early as slots are limited. For more information, please visit www.dlsuworlds.com.
