HWS / IDEA Round Robin Applications Due

APPLICATION DEADLINE: January 31

To apply, just e-mail a debating CV for each debater to Eric Barnes (barnes@hws.edu).

International teams should also indicate:
1) if they would need any travel subsidy in order to attend;
2) the minimum subsidy that would allow them to attend, if accepted;

As always, we have a fairly limited budget for travel subsidies, and priority will be given first to teams from teams who cannot afford the expense (as opposed to being unwilling) and second to teams for whom travel expenses are exceptionally high. Our maximum travel subsidy is $1000 per team, but they are typically less than this.
We will have decisions on applications by February 14.

JUDGING:
Our judging pool is almost full, but please contact us if you are a highly qualified BP judge who is interested in being a part of the 2012 Round Robin.

GUU Parliamentary Invite‏

As I'm sure many of you know, IVs are but a mere hobby for debaters of the Grand Old Union. GUU debating is really all about Parliamentaries. And, as we spend so much of our time explaining to you what they are, and how much fun they are, we stopped for a minute and realised we are being selfish. You should all get to join in the fun... but just for one night.

We invite you to enter a strange new world where the only Economist we care about is Mr Callum MacMaster, where facts are mainly ignored, and where marks for style include how well you can iron a shirt.

On Friday 16th March, we are holding the final Parliamentary of the 2011-12 season, where the Whig Club shall be in government, lead by the Hon. Property Ladder, known to many of you as Mr John McKee.

There are five clubs in the Chamber - and each has one space for a guest to speak in a round during the Evening Session. Beyond that, every Club is opening membership to any guest who wishes to join for the day to sit on the benches and ask POIs to the other Clubs. If you would like to speak, selection will be made by the leader of each Club. Get in touch if you wish to speak and I shall pass on details. There will also be a small prize for the best guest speaker.

The Parliamentary starts at 3pm and the Afternoon Session ends around 7pm, at which point we have dinner. If you wish to join us for dinner (to which you are most welcome) the cost is £10 BUT we need numbers by Tuesday 13 March. The Evening Session will commence around 8.30pm, and finish (roughly) 1am. As it is the last Parliamentary, the Clerks then retire to work out who has won, while everyone else consumes a large volume of complimentary alcohol. Hopefully, the results shall be available within a few hours, and will then be announced by candlelight in the Debates Chamber in the wee small hours.

We guarantee a fantastic night of true GUU hospitality, and we'd love you to take your chance to join in.

There is no charge, other than for dinner if you wish to attend. You will receive lots of free alcohol in the Evening Session, and we can offer crash if required. Please let us know if you're coming in advance to have an estimate of numbers. Dress code for the Evening Session is officially black tie, though a suit shall suffice. Please note that to sit in the Chamber, the dress code is a minimum of shirt and trousers (female equivalent: office wear) and there is a strict no denim and no trainers policy. To speak, you must be wearing a tie and ideally a jacket.

Any questions, please do not hesitate to get in touch with myself at kirstykakanskas[at]gmail[dot]com, or the Debates Convener at debates[at]guu[dot]co[dot]uk.

The guide to Parliamentary debating can be found at the following link -
http://www.gudialectic.co.uk/archives.html - and contains more information.

Hoping to see you there, as well as at Ancients on 2nd/3rd March (details of which can be found at http://glasgowancients2012.wordpress.com).

UL Open 2012

Hey one and all,

The UL Open 2012 will be taking place on the 9th and 10th of March this year and promises to be the best one yet!

The team cap is provisionally set at 32 teams.

We have a wonderful and very enthuastic CA team this year including:
-UCD's finest Christine Simpson (WUDC semi-finalist!,EUDC quarter Finalist 2011,Cambridge 2011 quarter Finalist,Oxford quarter Finalist 2011, Edinburgh Open 2011 Winner, most importantly UL Open 2011 Finalist and too many other breaks too mention)
-UL's (whatevs NUIG) own Maurice Cotter (UL Open 2011 Finalist,UCD Earlsfort Open Finalist 2011,Cork IV 2010 Semi-Finalist,Cork Open 2011 Finalist and various other accomplishments such as best speaker wins etc.)

Our Tabmaster is Harry McEvansoneya (UL Open Finalist), who has run tabs at EUDC(!!!),SOAS, UCD, Maynooth and Trinity as well as being an excellent tabmaster at last year's IV. He has confirmed he will be mostly sober so huzzah!

As always UL never fails to feed its guests and there will be food and drink in abundance including baked goods on arrival (provided ye arrive on time)!

Reg will open on January 30th 2012.
Payment in advance of the IV is 60euro.
Payment on the day is 70euro.
There will be a reduced reg fee for UK teams (30 euro) and non-IONA teams (FREE).

We have a limited amount of crash, with the first priority being making sure any judges that travel are comfortable and any non-Irish teams are also a priority so if you could book accommodation for the weekend where possible it would be great. If you need crash, don't be afraid to contact me and I'll endeavor to help.

There is a certain amount of money set aside for funding judges to come down to Limerick, if you're interested in coming drop me an email or a phone call (ulopen2012@gmail.com and 0870569164 respectively) and I'll do my best to accommodate you. There will be much free drink and appreciation.

Any questions, feel free to contact me at ulopen2012@gmail.com.

Best wishes,

MAD Mini 2012

Hello everyone!
As many of you will have heard, MAD Mini is an upcoming tournament hosted at Monash Caulfield between the 10th and the 12th of February, aimed at easing new and old debaters back into the swing of things before University rears its ugly head. As many of you pay not know, however, registration for MAD Mini is now open! You can register at our website (http://www.madmini.me), and we advise you to as soon as possible to give us the best idea of numbers for all that food and alcohol you'll be consuming over the weekend. Registration is $50 for debaters and $30 for adjudicators, and we'll send through payment information as soon as you register.

If you scroll through the Facebook event description or look at the website, you'll also see a number of updates, including a new schedule, and information about our awesome social functions. There's also the option to purchase food for dinner on Sunday night after the Grand Final, and we hope you'll all join us for some excellent (and affordable) pub food at the Racecourse Hotel to celebrate the (undoubtedly excellent) debate.

If you are travelling from interstate (or even just very far away in Melbourne), then are offering a free billeting service for your needs. Just let us know on the registration form if you'll be requiring a bed, and our volunteers will happily put you up for no charge. You should also let us know if you need a lift from the airport, so that you aren't stranded out at Tullamarine. Equally, if you're willing to put people up for the weekend, don't hesitate to volunteer!

As always, if you have any questions please don't hesitate to contact us at enquiries@madmini.me. You can also follow us on Twitter and RSVP to the Facebook Event.

Look forward to seeing you all at MAD Mini 2012!

Launching Debating Mate Worldwide‏

Debate Mate, a charity that works in the poorest parts of the UK teaching debating and this year we're all set to take this to the world. We send top university debaters into schools around the world to teach debating. Check out the promo video for more information:

We have secured funding for a number of places globally and want to continue to branch out the new places in Africa, America, The Middle East, and Asia and we therefore really need the support of the debating community to act as mentors around the world. We were recently in Israel and Palestine and we were overwhelmed with how supportive the Debaters of Israel were!

Debate Mate empowers young people and creates the leaders of tomorrow. We send top university debaters into areas of high child-poverty, to run after-school debating clubs, through which children improve their verbal intelligence and higher-order thinking skills.

Our core programme has been running in the UK for four years and reaches over 2,000 young people a week across four cities. Farther afield, we have successfully taught our programme to disadvantaged schoolchildren in Nepal, Palestine/Israel, and Boston.

This year we are expanding our international work in a big way, with a concerted launch of Debate Mate Worldwide. In addition to those countries already mentioned, we expect to be running summer schemes in India, the UAE, Kenya, Uganda, Jamaica, South Africa and Rwanda. We are looking for motivated 'world-changers' to help us reach even more young people and change even more lives. This is open to ALL debaters Worldwide.

Sign up at debatemate.com/worldwide. This is open to ALL debaters world wide. If you have any questions don't hesitate to contact seun@debatemate.com
