WODC registration closes today.

Hi all,

Registration for the third World Online Debating Championships will close TODAY, so what's it going to take to get you to commit? Promises of untold fame and fortune? Guarantees of everlasting happiness? Certain knowledge that at the end you'll be a whole lot smarter than when you started out? One of those is definitely true. The others, who knows. Oone thing that's certain is if you don't register at all none of this will be possible.

To register send $US20 per person or $100 per team (remember, teams can have unlimited number of participants) to wodc@debatewise.org via Paypal. If you can't use Paypal let me know. If you can’t afford it let me know. If you need more time let me know.

Thanks to everyone who has registered. To everyone else - come on, we want you to join us.

May 31st is the registration deadline not the `payment` or `team round-up` deadline; so don`t worry if you haven`t got a fully-formed team yet, you have until July for that.
For now, register: http://www.facebook.com/l/32179WanOZFH0iyaPVQzZyO9eQA/www.debatewise.org or email dc@debatewise.com.

Cheers Nadia :)

South African Nationals Registration Update

Dear Debating Community

Please remember that early registration closes this Friday at 6:00pm. Please make sure that you have registered on the registration site (www.sa-debating.co.za), and that you have added the number of teams and judges that your institution requires. You do NOT need to fill in all of the participants' details by the close of early registration, but we request that all details are entered by the close of late registration on the 10th of June. If you are still experiencing problems with the site, please contact Paida at reg.paida@gmail.com, and he will assist you. In any correspondence (such as invoice requests) please specify which Institution AND CAMPUS you are representing, as we have had some confusion due to this issue.

Please also note that we must receive proof of payment by Friday at 6:00pm to guarantee your slots. If we do not receive your proof of payment, you will lose your slots.

Training material will be going up onto the website shortly. We are finalizing the content at the moment, and material should be available on the site as soon as we are done. For more regular updates, join the Nationals 2011 Facebook group. Just search "Nationals 2011", and you should find us!

All the best,

Stephen Thompson

UADC 2011 about to start

If you are waking up and wondering how things are going at UADC.  Well they have not started yet.  Apparently (from twitter etc) the number of teams were greater than the tab system could hold and the council made some changes to the margin (increased from 12 to 15).  I'm not sure what that last one means but the two issues meant the Tab system had to be re-written which caused the start of the tournament to be delayed.  But they seem to be still planning to hold 3 rounds today.

So if you want to watch some debates they will be starting shortly (just after 7am UK) on http://www.idebate.org/streaming/uadc2011/

R1.M1.TH would not allow minors to be involved in politics
R1.M2.TH would scrap the government pension system
R1.M3.TH house regrets the practice of 'tiger' parenting

One blog that seems to be reporting from the tournament is http://pigtales-can-debate.blogspot.com/
Of course you can also follow updates on twitter via the #UADC2011 tag.

DLSU Worlds Reminder‏

Dear World Debate Community,

There are less than 7 days left for you to make your down payments for DLSU Worlds! You may view the google doc https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0AtxsFl-mzfcYdE83RDhvYnI3Sk5rb2FudVFiWWpNUWc&hl=en&authkey=CKPxs5EB&pli=1#gid=5 to see whether or not we have received your payments.

For those who have yet to make their payments, please indicate in the comments section of the wiring slip (if applicable) the word "Debate" so that the bank and the university's accounting office would know where to forward such payment.

Also, we have received a number of questions regarding payment so we decided to address the common ones here:

1) My bank does not make transactions in Philippine Pesos (PHP), how can I send over my payment?
Our bank generally accepts all currencies and will convert them to Philippine Pesos before depositing it into our account. Transactions made in USD and EUR tend to clear faster than others.

2) If I don't wire over my money in PHP what should I use as basis for the exchange rate?
There are a number of sites online that can provide you with a currency converter. We have also placed one on the homepage of our website (http://www.dlsuworlds.com/) for easy access. You can use any of these converters to get a ROUGH ESTIMATE of the amount you will have to send over. Once the payment has been cleared by our accounting office, we will inform you of the exact amount received.

3) What if the amount received by your Accounting Office is not enough to cover the 50% balance?
If the amount received covers at least 90% of your expected down payment then the remaining balance may be sent with the second payment. If the payment is less than 90% of the expected amount then we will request for you to make a follow up payment in order to reach the minimum requirement.

4) Can my institution pay in full during the Second Phase?
Yes, you may pay in full at this stage.

For any questions or clarifications, please send an email to registration@dlsuworlds.com or james.sy@dlsuworlds.com.

We look forward to seeing you all in Manila!

Best,
Gabriel Romeo Ferriols Pavico

Problems with Blogger.

Hi All,
The Blogger service seems to have had a serious system issue in the last few days.  They deleted tens of thousands of posts across all blogs using the blogger system and in restoring them they seem to have pushed a number of older posts up the list.  At the same time I have been editing the labels on old posts as part of a wider project that is currently ongoing.  As a result anything I edited in the last few days got deleted and then restored with yesterday's date.  Therefore you may have seen posts from 2006 suddenly popping up again.  I have fixed these and hopefully blogger have fixed their system.

Thanks
Colm

SA Nationals Reg and Training Site Issues‏

Dear Debating Community
We understand that many institutions have been having problems registering and acquiring training material for Nationals 2011 on http://www.sa-debating.co.za/. We would sincerely like to apologise if you have experienced problems with the site.

As part of our sponsorship agreement, the registration and training site was contracted out to a web development company who were tasked with setting up the reg system and training portal. They assured us that the site would be functional when registration opened, however a number if unexpected errors have appeared as institutions have tried to register, and the training portal is not yet functional.

We are doing our best to highlight the urgency and importance of getting the site working as we intended, and are communicating problems to the web development team as soon as we receive them. Unfortunately, as we are not directly involved in the web development, we can only relay information on to you as we receive it from the developers, and we have been forced to wait for them to fix the errors and get back to us.

We are doing our best to ensure that the site becomes fully functional as soon as possible, and were today again assured by the developers that they were working on the last of the bugs, and that they should be sorted out very soon.

This has obviously impacted the availability of training material as we promised to provide. We have quite a bit of material ready to upload, but no site to upload to yet. This should also be rectified very soon. As we plan for the site to availible for access beyond Nationals 2011, these are are problems we should only have to deal with once.

We will do our best to keep you informed of the progress, and we are hoping that all will be fully functional soon.

Thanks again for your patience.

Zimbabwe PAUDC 2011: DCA applications now open!

Applications are now open for the three Deputy Chief Adjudicator posts at this year’s Pan-African Universities Debating Championship (PAUDC). The tournament will take place in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe from 4th – 11th December 2011. The PAUDC 2011 organizing committee will work in conjunction with the Zimbabwe Debating Network and Contemporary Affairs Foundation in hosting the Tournament.

PAUDC is the largest debating tournament in Africa, attracting participants from several countries across the continent. It functions both as a regional tournament and a development project aimed at promoting all levels of university debating in Africa. DCA applicants should therefore keep in mind that, in addition to the usual organisational and judging duties of an adjudication team, they will be expected to be part of developing and running a comprehensive training programme.

We are looking for 3 DCAs for PAUDC 2011. In keeping with the regional nature of the tournament we are committed to regional diversity in our selection. We are also committed to expanding PAUDC as a tournament of international standards and quality. Non-African applicants are therefore welcome. There is also a strong possibility of travel grants for DCAs.

The following commitments and criteria will guide the selection of our DCAs:

A commitment to quality adjudication at PAUDC, with a focus on developing debating in Africa.

A commitment to introducing and maintaining international judging standards in regional debating (WUDC experience would be an advantage).

A solid background in BP debating and/or speaking (WUDC experience would be an advantage).

Organisational experience is a must, but it need not be related to debating.

Applicants should plan to be in Zimbabwe up to a week before the tournament (i.e. from the 27th November 2011). In the months leading up to PAUDC, each DCA will work on a specific aspect of the training programme. It is therefore a requirement that applicants will be easily contactable and ready to work on planning the training programme in this period.

The application process:
Application Phase: 10th May - 15th June
Each application should send a debating CV and a completed DCA application form to the Chief Adjudicator via e-mail (cweley@gmail.com). Applicants will receive e-mail notification upon receipt of their completed application.

Review Phase: 16th June - 29th June
Applications will be reviewed by the CA. If necessary, applicants may be contacted to provide additional information. If candidates are particularly closely matched, the CA may ask for feedback from the wider debating community on two or more applicants (to aid the decision making process).

Announcement: 30th June
Successful applicants will be notified and their names announced on the tournament facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=201169549917040&ref=ts) as well as other online debating forums.

Please feel free to contact me (cweley@gmail.com) with any questions about your application.

Kind regards

Clive Eley
Chief Adjudicator

Message from the Pan African Debate Championship Executive Council

E-mail from the president of the Pan African Debate Championship Executive Council:

Dear Debating Community

The Pan African Universities Debate Championship (Pan) Executive Council would to report to all that are interested in the affairs of Debating in Africa.

There is a steady stream of activity in the African Continent as we try to turn the tide against youth activism in sponsored violence and being hired guns of dictators. We need now more than ever to foster the culture of debate within this Continent. It is by no means an easy task and requires all hands on deck for this momentous task. Our forefathers have resorted to violence to solve their disputes and today as the youth of Africa we need to change a culture that will destroy this great Continent.

That is why as the Pan Executive Council we are happy that the youth of Africa have come together across Africa to demonstrate that the solutions of this Continent lie in Education and Debate. We therefore announce that the Africa will be a hive of activity with South Africa conducting its 17th National Debating Competition, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Nigeria will also be conducting their respective National Competitions. All this activity will lead us to the Prestigious Pan African Universities Debating Championships which will be hosted by Zimbabwe in December 2011.

We invite the world to join us in these respective activities and we can learn from each other.

Africa more that ever needs the culture of Debate as our Continent faces testing times, the Youth need to play a role in its political shape and instead of being weapons, we need to be ideas and intellectual voices of our Continent.

Sipho D Kilani
President of Pan African Debate Championship Executive Council

ULV Summer Debate Training / Individuals Tournament‏

Dear All,
The University of La Verne would like to invite you all to sunny southern California for a week of intense debate training followed by a uniquely formatted individuals tournament. This guarantees anyone who attends excellent instruction and guidance from some of the most experienced trainers in the country, and in fact the world. Between them, they have racked up over 30 visits to the World Universities Debating Championships. In addition, the University of La Verne’s debate team promises to assist in any way possible including transportation to and from airports and, if necessary, from lodging to the school. Of course, they will also be providing assistance in their specialty, making sure that everyone has a great time outside of the training!

We are looking to make this event as accessible as possible to participants outside of the state of California, so we are only charging a $75 registration fee per individual or a $250 fee for any team with 4 or more participants (with no upwards limit), inclusive of the entire week of training and the tournament. Waivers will be considered for teams dealing with extreme travel expenses or suffering other financial hardships. Also, we have secured affordable housing in the University’s dorms for participants who would like to take advantage of this. This event will run from July 19th - July 23rd, 2011. We will also be accommodating individuals who would like to attend only the training, or only the tournament. We would ask that anyone interested will have registered by July 1st. For more information see below.

Cheers,
Josh Martin

ULV Summer Training Camp / Tournament 2011

Training:
The goal of our training is to provide as individualized of an experience to each debater as possible. Our trainers have worked with all levels of debaters, from coaching World Finalists and National Champions, to teaching new students who have never even seen a debate before. We will be covering virtually every aspect of debate, including basic format, advanced strategy, manner, research techniques, case construction, and argumentation theory. With a strong emphasis on drilling and participation to put this material into practice, participants are sure to come out as much more complete debaters ready to excel in competition.

Main Trainers:

Ian Lising:
6 years as Chair of World Council
6 time World Grand Final Adjudicator
10 time Oxford International IV Final Adjudicator

Justin Jones Rodriguez:
2000 World Grand Finalist
Oxford & Cambridge IVs Finalist
2001 Worlds Breaking Judge

Josh Martin:
Worlds Breaking Judge: Cork ’09, Koc ’10, Bots ‘11
Oxford & Cambridge IVs Breaking Judge
Top Judge 2009 US National Championships
2007 US National Champion
Individuals Tournament:
The tournament will consist of 5 preliminary rounds, breaking either to semis or finals. This BP formatted tournament is designed to accompany the training and highlight the chance to be exposed to different schools of thought and approaches to debate, as debaters will be changing partners every round. Partners for the first round will be randomly assigned, and for every subsequent round power matching will be done based on team points and then within each room, partners will be reallocated based on speaker points. The highest two speakers will be paired together, then 3rd and 4th, etc. giving everyone the chance to work with individuals from different institutions, around their same skill and experience level, throughout the tournament. At the University of La Verne we have had the tradition of running a tournament in this format every year, and it has always been hugely successful.

Socials:
We have a team at La Verne that is almost as (or maybe more) committed to having a good time as they are to debate. Add to that our being located in the middle of Southern California and you have the chance to take part in virtually any kind of social you can think of. We will be letting the participants choose what the socials can be, ranging from beach trips, clubbing, cultural downtown Los Angeles, or anything else you can suggest.

Schedule:
July 19th : Arrival; Introductions; Beginning of training
July 19th – 21st : 8 hour training days, Social events
July 22nd : 4 Preliminary tournament rounds
July 23rd : 1 preliminary round; Elimination rounds; Departure

Registration:
For any other questions regarding the training or tournament feel free to contact Josh Martin at either jmartin@laverne.edu or 909) 263-1112. Registration should be finalized by July 1st.

DCA nominations now open for ANU Easters 2012

For Easters 2012, ANU would like to attract the best adjudication talent out there. Accordingly, we are having an open nomination process for Deputy Chief Adjudicators ('DCAs'). Nominations are open now, and will close on 30 May 2011.

Please go to: http://anueasters.com/adjudication for an online nomination form, and either nominate yourself or someone who you think would do an amazing job. You should receive a confirmation email shortly after submitting your online nomination. If this does not happen, please contact me.

As such, we really encourage everyone to apply or to nominate a person who fits the bill.

Nominations will remain confidential. After the Easters 2012 Committee has reviewed the nominations we will announce the successful DCAs.

We really look forward to receiving your nominations.

Registration is open for the 3rd WODC‏

We are proud to announce that registration is open for the 3rd World Online Debating Championships. Thirty two teams from all over the world will compete in a knockout tournament, debating anything from pre-nuptial agreements, through European tax law, all the way to denying heavy drinkers liver transplants.

Last year (in front of an all-star judging pool) the Czech Republic beat New Zealand in the final. Could your team beat the reigning world champions? Can you impress this year’s top adjudicators? You can team up with anyone: people from the Internet; your school, university or local community; or, for the hard-core, you can compete by yourself.

This year we’ve upgraded our system, tweaked the rules and improved the prizes. We’re expecting all 32 places to be filled by exceptional teams and you could be one of them, with a chance to win the coveted WODC 2011 trophy!

The tournament starts in July and the winners can expect to be involved every two weeks from then until the end of September. This makes it a very tough competition and whoever ends up victorious can take great pride in their achievement.

Entry is $20 per person and capped at $100 per team, though bursaries are available to all deserving applicants.

More information can be found on our site, you can register there too: http://debatewise.org/wodc

We are really looking forward to what will be an exceptional tournament and we hope you can join us.
