LSE Open (Call for Judges)‏

Would you like to judge great debates, enjoy amazing socials, and get lots of free food and alcohol?

Being an Open at which many experienced judges will be debating , the tournament requires a large number of volunteers to act as qualified external judges.

Looking at our tab, we are confident in predicting that this tournament will see some of the most competitive debates of the term. We are very dedicated to bringing in as many qualified judges as possible.

We are thus very grateful (a gratitude expressed largely in free liquor) for all those who will come out and judge.

Please contact us in advance, either on facebook, by joining the event "judging at the LSE Open" ( http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=149897958397311&ref=ts)  of my emailing John.ashbourne (at) gmail.com or A.A.Kazi (at) LSE.ac.uk.

Looking forward to seeing you all in February,

Interesting post about presidential speaking style

The BBC website recently had an interesting article about the speaking style of president John F Kennedy.  The article was to mark the 50th anniversary of his inagural address.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-12215248

It lists 6 key elements to JFK's style which made it so successful.

1. Contrasts

2. Three-part lists
3. Contrasts combined with lists
4. Alliteration
5. Bold imagery
6. Audience analysis

While it may not be possible or practical to apply all of this in your debating style it is worth a read.  It certainly may be more applicable if you are writing a prepared speech and have time to develop and build in such elements.

USU 2011 Announces Adjudication Team‏

We received a huge number of high quality applications to serve as members of the CA team for this year's USU in Vermont. We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for applying and for their patience while we finalized our line-up. We are delighted to announce that our team will be as follows:

Stephen Boyle - CA
Stephen was an accomplished debater who broke twice at Worlds, was a runner up and twice finalist of the Oxford IV, a winner of the Irish Times, the Yale and Hart House IV's and the Bristol Open and a Gold Medallist of the Literary and Historical Society in UCD. He has judged the finals of both Euros and USU and was a semi-final judge at this year's world championships. He will serve as a DCA of Belgrade Euros 2012 if they win their bid to host the competition.

Adam Goldstein - DCA
Adam was an incredibly successful debater both in the WUDC and American parliamentary format. In WUDC he has broken twice at Worlds, was the top speaker at the Oxford IV, a winner of the Cambridge IV and the top speaker at the Yale IV. In American Parliamentary, he won the North American Championships, the Harvard Tournament, and was Finalist or better at no less than thirteen other tournaments. Adam is also an immensely experienced judge, and served on the final panel of this year's main break at Worlds.

Anish Mitra - DCA
Anish has been one of the most consistent performers on the American debating circuits for some years. He is winner of five American Parliamentary tournaments, including the APDA national championships. He also has an incredibly impressive WUDC record, which includes reaching the Semis of Worlds, the finals of USU and the semis of the Oxford IV. He has served as judging director of the APDA national championships, and three times as judging director of the Stanford Tournament.

Mary Nugent - DCA
Mary is one of the most experienced debaters and judges from the IONA circuit. She is winner of the UCL Open, the London IV, Oxford Women's and the Cardiff IV. She had judged the finals of Worlds, the Cambridge IV, the LSE Open and several other competitions. Mary will be familiar to several US schools having been selected for the prestigious English Speaking Union tour of America last year.

Shamila Parmanand - DCA
Sharmila has an impressive pedigree as a speaker, having broken at Worlds, reached the final of Australs, having also been in the semi finals twice. She is a three times winner of the AUDC tournament and a winner of the Philippine national championships. She has since focused her attention on judging. She had judged the Worlds final, served as a DCA of both Australs and UADC and most recently was appointed CA of Worlds 2013 which will be held in Berlin.

Sam Natale - ACA
Sam will serve as assistant to the chief adjudicator, and will be responsible for liaising between the adjudication team and the org comm for the tournament. He is the most successful WUDC debater in UVM's history, having reached the final of WUPID and breaking at Worlds, as well as reaching the semi finals of USU, and being top speaker at over ten regional tournaments in the North East. He was an invited judge at the Chinese national championships and was a DCA at the BIND championship.

De La Salle WUDC 2012: Feedback on DCA Applicants from Africa

Dear World Debating Community,

We are writing to open the feedback process for DCA applications for the Middle East and Africa debating region. Particularly because of the high quality of applicants, it is more important than ever that we receive as much feedback as possible on candidates. Feedback will form a very significant part of decisions about DCA appointments.

We encourage all members of the international debating community to give feedback on any candidates they have any familiarity with. This includes those who are themselves candidates. Unfortunately, anonymous feedback cannot be taken into account; this is simply to ensure we know each piece of feedback is from a separate unique individual. All feedback is, however, entirely confidential, and will be seen only by the Chief Adjudicators.

We are seeking feedback on all aspects of candidates’ ability to do the DCA job. As well as feedback about ‘how good’ candidates are, feedback on candidate’s particular strengths and weaknesses are valued, as they help build a good all-round team. All feedback should be sent to both sam.block@dlsuworlds.com and lucinda.david@dlsuworlds.com, and should include the word ‘Feedback’ in the subject-line. All feedback must be received by 1200 GMT on the 4th of February.

The candidates are:

Kimera Chetty
Joe Roussos

Finally, if you believe you have applied to be a DCA but do not see yourself on the list above, please do get in touch.

Once again, please do send in your feedback; it will make a real difference to this process.

Many thanks,

Sam Block and Lucinda David
Chief Adjudicators

2011 FLTRP Cup‏

The Foreign Languages Teaching and Research Press (FLTRP), organizer of the most prestigious English language debating tournament in China, invites you participate as a guest adjudicator at the 15th FLTRP Cup National English Debating Championship. The FLTRP Cup will be held May 7-17, 2011 at the FLTRP’s Convention Center in Beijing.

To apply to be an adjudicator, please visit:

http://www.chinadebate.org/

Last year, the FLTRP Cup made a successful transition to the British Parliamentary format, the style of debating employed by the World Universities Debating Championships. This transition was critical to connecting Chinese universities to the world of international debating and required the cooperation of volunteers willing to contribute their experience as adjudicators to the effort. We had an outstanding group of adjudicators attend, including Jess Prince (Canada), Sam Greenland (Australia), Josh Martin (USA), Stephen Boyle (Ireland), Lars Duursma (the Netherlands), Uri Merhav (Israel), Loke Wing Fatt (Singapore), Filip Dobranic (Slovenia), Jason Rogers (Canada), Justice Motlhabani (Botswana) and Monica Ferris (Canada) just to name a few. To continue the progress made last year, we are even more committed to bringing qualified adjudicators to this year's tournament.

Though the competition is open only to Chinese university students, there is a great need for skilled adjudicators to ensure that the standards of the BP style are upheld. To encourage you to participate in this effort, the FLTRP is sponsoring an incentive package for all qualified adjudicators with significant BP experience who agree to adjudicate at the 15th FLTRP Cup. All qualified adjudicators will receive:

· Scheduled transfers from Beijing airport to the FLTRP Convention Center (May 7)
· Hotel at the FLTRP Convention Center (May 7-14)
· All meals while at the Convention Center (May 7-14)
· Transfer to downtown Beijing (May 14)
· Hotel in downtown Beijing (May 14-17)
· Tours of major sites like the Great Wall & Forbidden City (May 15-16)
· Some meals while in downtown Beijing (May 15-16)
· Transfers to airport on May 17

Additionally, we will offer partial air travel subsidies to select qualified adjudicators.

The FLTRP Cup is the oldest, largest and most celebrated intercollegiate debating competition in China. Since it’s inception, the FLTRP Cup has been a major sponsor of intercollegiate debating in China and is on the forefront of promoting open discourse and intellectual exchange among the best and brightest of Chinese college students.

The details of points earned year by year can be found here

A few of things to note:
The rankings are by institution not college. (e.g. UCD L&H and UCD Law are separate). If you enter separately then you get ranked separately.

They are calculated by adding up the total team points scored by an institution at the World Debating Championships (e.g. if Limerick A score 15 and Limerick B score 14 the total for that institution is 29 for the year). This score is totalled for each of the last 5 years. The only exception is where an institution has hosted Worlds (e.g. Cork, Koc, UCD etc) within the last 5 years then their score from 6 years ago is added as they cannot compete in the year when they host.

If your team doesn't appear on the list it is because they didn't attend Worlds in the last 5 years.  I have considered adding other regional tournaments but there isn't a large enough BP format tournament in each region and it would skew the rankings for those regions who do have a major BP championship (e.g. Euros).
Where teams tied on the same total then the more recent results were weighted higher. (e.g. if two teams were tied on 10 points but one earned them in Botswana and the other in Koc then the team from Botswana ranks higher).

The score of every team counts. There have been complaints that the 8 teams Sydney sent to Vancouver pushes them up ahead of other teams. But the reality is they did send 8 teams. Worlds Council and the Org Comm allowed them send 8 teams. The rankings reflect what did happen not what people wish had happened.

The only exception is Yeditepe from the rankings. They were bottom of the list but it's not really to fair to them as they only debated 2 rounds at Cork before one speaker became seriously ill and they had to withdraw. 2 rounds really isn't enough for a ranking given some other teams are being measured from 45 rounds (9 rounds x 5 years). I think onw Worlds (i.e. 9 rounds) should be the minimum to earn a ranking.
There are various arguments about how I should calculate these. There have been requests to calculate these by average per team. To just take the result from the top team per institution. To include other tournaments. etc. I have looked at these and in each case the arguments are valid. However for me this method of ranking rewards every point a team gets. Statistical manipulation don't determine where the institution is ranked, the institution's speakers do. I think ranking by the total goes some way to recognising and rewarding the overall organisation of a society over a number of years rather than just the skill of one or two individuals. A college may not have a team good enough to break but they are organised well enough to send more teams to Worlds. The best institutions tend to do both and they are at the top of the rankings.

The rankings are unofficial and are just something I have published on this site for a number of years. There is talk of moving to an officially Worlds Council sanctioned ranking system. I welcome that and will work with council on this.

Please let me know if you spot any errors in the rankings.

Inaugural Conference of the Malaysian Institute of Debate & Public Speaking 2011‏

Inaugural Conference of the Malaysian Institute of Debate & Public Speaking (MIDP) 2011

The newly formed Malaysian debate social enterprise, the Malaysian Institute of Debate & Public Speaking, headed by Iqbal Hafiedz and Adiba Shireen, held its first Conference for over 50 language lecturers and student affair officials from Malaysian tertiary institutions from both West and East Malaysia. It was held at the campus of the University of Technology MARA from 13th to 15th Jan 2011.

Entitled, "Managing In-Campus Student Communication Programmes", the 3-Day workshop aimed to give managerial and supervisory staff from the academic and administrative divisions of tertiary institutions the wherewithals of establishing public speaking and debating clubs, sustaining them and helping them to excel. The invited trainers delivered lectures on topics which ranged from how to start from ground zero in raising student awareness to the importance of communication skills, to specific details in planning a budget, a training programme, as well as student facilitation skills in dealing with the diverse range of student personalities within the club milieu.

The last day of the event allowed the participants to put together specific plans and targets for their respective tertiary institutions. This was done in groups where each member shared his/her problems and aspirations for implementing communication programmes within the campus. All the groups also made group presentations to the entire class and all the trainers.

The entire Conference ended with a well deserved formal dinner for the participants, trainers and organisers.

The trainers in this Conference were: Professor Piyanart from Chulalongkorn University, Latif from IIUM, Tate from MMU, Azrul from IIUM. Saiful from UPM, Omar Salahudin, Dr Chandran from UM and Loke Wing Fatt from SAID.

Many thanks to Hafiedz, Adiba, Shamma, Shaq, Stifler, and all the other staff of the MIDP for hosting such a ground making debate education programme.

I look forward to seeing many interesting and important courses from MIDP.

cheers,

Loke Wing Fatt

News from US Universities Debating Championships

Lots to report...

Entries are now at 142 teams with 24 on the extra teams waiting list. It seems like we will really make our 200 team cap, so please enter now before you get shut out. Check the list to make sure you are there. If  you have judges that are not listed let us know. http://debate.uvm.edu/debateblog/usu2011/Entries.html

Many global teams have contacted us and we are negotiating with them on visas and issues like housing and they are arranging funding for transportation. We will add them to the list when we can. We have already added Alberta, British Columbia, ILCS Morocco, Manila, Marianapolis, National University of Singapore, Queen's, Tshwane University of Technology, and University College Dublin.

We have considered the applications of the many DCAs and we have made decisions. We are contacting them now and will make an announcement later this week. Thank you so much for the impressive array of global talent that applied.

After our DCAs are announced we will be putting out a call for judges to add to our pool. Some subsidy will be available, rego waivers, housing and even limited travel sponsorship. Stand by for this. We will have an
announcement about those agreeing to attend to judge in about a month.

There is still time to apply to be part of the America's Cup Debates. This open field is attracting some of the best debaters in the world. Application deadline for one of the 16 spots is the end of January. Send
us your top 5 tournament finishes. http://debate.uvm.edu/debateblog/usu2011/Americas_Cup.html

We are working on finalizing the budget for this large event. We are still seeking sponsors. Point us at any you know of and we are in discussions now.

Initial Information on WUDC *en espaƱol*

With Colm's permission, I have asked contacts in Venezuela to provide as much information as possible for the Spanish language World Championships to be held in Caracas later this year. Much of the information thus far is of a 'this is how we generally do things' nature, and more details and final confirmation are to follow. Much will depend on the number of teams that apply for places, &c., but for now, here is what we have:

The tournament will run from July 25th - July 31st inclusive.

Particpation fees are traditionally kept very low, if any at all are charged (of course, for a tournament of this nature they may be slightly higher than the norm) and no decision yet has been made on what fees if any would be applied to overseas institutions.

Accommodation for debaters visiting Caracas from other parts of South America (principally Colombia and Peru) has in the past been arranged domestically - that is, debaters have stayed with members of Caracas University for the duration, participating in the home life. Of course, for this tournament, it will depend greatly on how many people are actually attending, but we can be sure that our Venezuelan hosts will make sure that people are comfortable and well looked-after when there. The usual socials programme and visits around the city will hopefully be offered as well (and having been lucky enough to meet with the Venezuelan debaters at IDAS for a few years, I can confirm that these guys know how to party!)

As people in Venezuela are currently returning after the Christmas break and a successful time at Botswana WUDC, more information will be forthcoming shortly, and we hope to release more details publicly after January 16th. Watch this space, and please support what is a very worthwhile and necessary venture for the development of debate globally.

Best wishes to all readers of the blog for the New Year.

G. Rhydian Morgan

Offline for a short time

I know that there are a number of emails and announcements waiting in my in box to be published to the blog. People have also asked when will I publish the 2011 version of my world rankings. Unfortunately due to unforeseen family commitments I have not been on line for the last few days. I will be back on line early next week and will catch up on the back log as quickly as possible.
