Report, Results and Motions of the 3rd East Asian Inter-Varsity Invitational English Debate Competition 2012 (16th to 18th March) in Macau

The 3rd East Asian Inter-Varsity Invitational English Debate Competition 2012 came to a successful conclusion over the weekend in Macau.  Conceived and first held in December 2009 to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the return of Macau as a Special Administrative Region (S.A.R.) to China, it aims to bring together the best university debate teams and best judges from Asian countries/territories to celebrate debate excellence.  It is also aimed at exposing the best varsity debaters in Macau to the top Asian debaters to raise the overall debating standards of the Macau debating community.

Organised by the newly formed Macau English Debate Association (MEDA), and sponsored by the Higher Education Service Centre of the Macau Government, a total of 12 teams debated in 5 Worlds' Preliminary Rounds.  Asia was represented 7 countries/territories: National University of Singapore (NUS) from Singapore, University of Technology MARA  (UT MARA) from Malaysia, Chulalongkorn University (CU) from Thailand, Chung Ang University (CAU) from South Korea, Tsing Hua University (THU) from Mainland China, Hong Kong University (HKU) from Hong Kong (S.A.R.) and Ateneo De Manila University (ADMU) from The Philippines.  Macau was represented by University of Macau ( UMAC; 3 Teams), Macau Polytechnic Institute (MPI;1 Team). University of Saint Joseph (USJ; 1 Team) and Macau University of Science & Technology ( MUST;1 Team).

The 7 invited judges were: CA: Loke Wing Fatt (Singapore), DCAs: Logan Balavijendran (Malaysia) , "Tate" Suthen Thomas (Malaysia), "TJ" Thepparith Senamngern (Thailand), Invited Judges: Mark Darren (Malaysia), Low Kim Heng (Singapore), and Valeri Inting (The Philippines).

In the Grand Final, ADMU (OG), NUS (OO), UT MARA (CG) and HKU (CO) debated the motion "This House prefers a Constitutional Monarchy to a Republic".  NUS, comprising Kenneth Kang and Xiao Hong Yu, were unanimously voted the Champions by the 7 judges and took home 5000 Macau Pacatas (MOP) in cash as prize money.  The Best Speaker of the Grand Final was Benjamin So of HKU.

The Top Five Speakers were:

I would like to thank Mr Theo Cheng, the President of the Macau English Debate Association (MEDA), Mr Raymond Lio, the Vice-President of the Macau English Debate Association (MEDA), Florence Choy, Kitty, and all the volunteers who worked very hard, and happily, to make it such an enjoyable tournament for all.

The debate motions for the Tournament were:
Round 1:  THW trade with oppressive regimes.
Round 2:  THBT religiously affiliated institutions such as universities and hospitals should provide insurance plans that cover all costs for medicinal contraceptives for their students and staff.
Round 3:  THBT states should sell their territories to foreign entities to fill national coffers.
Round 4:  THW bar Saudi Arabia from the London Olympics 2012 unless it allows its female athletes to compete in it.
Round 5:  THBT Western liberal democracies should only decide on whether to legalise gay marriages through the process of a referendum.

Grand Final:  This House prefers a Constitutional Monarchy to a Republic.

MMU UADC-FAQ: Granting of team slots and payment of pre-registration‏

Hi all,

We've compiled a list of questions that we’ve received with regards to pre-registration and registration and here are our answers to them.

Q: Is the registration list published anywhere?
A: It’s available here <http://www.mmuuadc2012.org/node/16>.

Q: How were the slots granted to teams, adjudicators and observers?
A: To balance diversity and reward initiative to register early, we used a system of granting two teams to every institution that requested two or more teams and the number requested to those that did not. This was done on a first-come, first-served basis. Even with this policy, several institutions are on the wait-list and have not been allocated any team slots.

The decision to grant two slots per institution was on the basis of the tournament growing in size and the massive expression of interest that we received during pre-registration: over 241 team slots were requested, we’ve granted 121 (excluding the two teams from the host). This is in line with trends that we’ve seen at both the AustralAsian Intervarsity Debating Championships and the World University Debating Championships.

For the adjudicator slots, we allocated only as many as were necessary to meet the N-rule. However, in the case that an institution registered more adjudicators than were required to meet the N-rule we granted them those additional slots. For example, if Institution X registered for 4 teams and 6 adjudicators, they would be granted 2 team and 4 adjudicator slots.

For observers, we granted as many slots as were requested.

Q: Does being granted slots mean I’m guaranteed a place at the UADC?
A: No, it does not.

Those slots will be held for you till March 14th. However, if your institution fails to pay the pre-registration payment of MYR400 per debater or adjudicator and MYR600 before that date, we will release whatever slots that are not paid for in full. Please bear in mind that to pay for a team slot, you will have to pay pre-registration for the 3 debaters and 1 adjudicator i.e. MYR 1200.

Paying the pre-registration payment will hold your slot for you till April 14th by which time you should pay for all your participants in full. Failure to pay registration fees in full by April 14th could either result in the application of the late registration penalty or your unpaid slot being passed on to other institutions.

Q: If my institution hasn’t been granted a team slot (i.e. we are on the waiting list), what should we do?
A: Don’t panic. You still might have an opportunity to get a slot. If institutions that have been granted slots fail to pay their pre-registration sufficiently to hold those slots before the stipulated date of 14th March, we will release the slots and grant them to institutions on the wait list. We will do this on a basis of 1 team (and adjudicator) at a time, moving down a time-sorted list. If you’re on the waiting list, you should be ready to pay pre-registration as soon as possible after you’re informed that you’ve been granted a slot.

Please note that if your institution registered after midnight February 18th, you will not be eligible for a slot under this wait list process. Institutions in this category will be granted slots after all other requests have been exhausted.

Q: My institution requested more than 2 team slots, is there any chance of me getting the additional teams?
A: Yes, there is, but it is contingent upon two factors. First, there will need to be a sufficient number of requested slots that are not paid for before the March 14th deadline such that we can allocate those to
institutions on the wait list. Second, anything left over, will be allocated (one team at a time on a first-come, first-served basis) to institutions that have requested more than 2 teams slots. The further down your institution is on the registration list, the less likely you are to get the additional slots.

Q: If I’m granted slots later, will I need to pay the late registration penalty?
A: The late registration penalty will only apply to institutions that have been allocated slots before March 14th and still have not paid for in full (i.e. MYR 1000 per participant) for them. This is only applicable if we
have chosen to continue to grant your institution those slots; given the demand for slots at the tournament, the more likely outcome is that we will allocate those slots to other institutions.

Q: Can we get an extension on the payment deadlines?
A: All requests for extensions should be communicated directly to the Registration Director at registration@mmuuadc2012.org. Please bear in mind that we will be restrictive in granting extensions due to tournament financial considerations.

North East Asian Open 2011

Chungang University won the 2011 North East Asian Open held in Taiwan.  In the final they defeated Multimedia University Melaka 1, The University of Hong Kong 1 and Korea University 2.  Lee Tang Yin Krystal (UU1) was the top speaker on the tab.  Tsinghua University 1 won the EFL competition.

Chung Ang win North East Asian Champions

Chung Ang University have won the 2011 North East Asian Champions

In the final they defeated Finalist are MMU Melaka (black&yellow), Chung ang uni (CAU1), Korea uni (KU2) And Hong Kong (HKU1).

The final motion was THBT international law should recognize the right of each state to unilaterally undertake humanitarian intervention.

Adjudicator subsidy policy for NEAO 2011.

It's a great pleasure for us to announce the adjudicator subsidy policy for NEAO 2011. Please refer to the following details.

●        Submission period

     During June 27th to August 3rd, please send your debate CV to neao2011adjcore@gmail.com, with its subject titled as “application for adjudicator subsidy,” and its content stating your full name, country, and contact information.

     Any submission made later than August 3rd will not be accepted.

     Subsidy applicants will also need to register for their slots during the registration periods.

●        Quota on recipients

     We will have a total of 15 adjudicators to receive full registration waiver, of which 10 will also receive an additional travel subsidy of NTD 8000.

●        Release Date

     The result will be published on August 7th. The organizing team will subsequently send a letter of confirmation to the chosen candidates to ascertain their attendance.

Today sees the final preliminary rounds of the UADC. 

Round 7 motions:
1. TH would make education in the high arts mandatory in schools.
2. TH would require presidential candidates to disclose their official records upon public request.
3. TH regrets the high priority given to sports in the national consciousness.

According to Twitter after 7 rounds only NUS1 have a perfect record of 7 wins.

Updates from UADC 2011

The Round 2 motions from UADC 2011 were
R2 Motions:


1.THBT copyright of visual media belongs to the subject and not the photographer
2.TH would build a national DNA database
3.TH would ban the collection and sale of location and usage information by smartphone companies.
 
After the tab problems yesterday round 3 had to be delayed until today so today will be a busy day.
 
Round 3 motions:
1. TH would ban adult entertainment from casinos.
2. THBT it is wrong to raise money for social welfare through natioinal lotteries.
3. TH would remove all sin taxes.
 
They are already onto round 4
1.THBT countries which pollute common watrs should lose their Exclusive Economic Zones
2.TH would not grant citizenship at birth to the children of foreigners on domestic soil
3.TH would pay the militaries of other states to fight our battles

UADC 2011 about to start

If you are waking up and wondering how things are going at UADC.  Well they have not started yet.  Apparently (from twitter etc) the number of teams were greater than the tab system could hold and the council made some changes to the margin (increased from 12 to 15).  I'm not sure what that last one means but the two issues meant the Tab system had to be re-written which caused the start of the tournament to be delayed.  But they seem to be still planning to hold 3 rounds today.
